In memory of Fridtjof Nansen
10 October 1861 – 13 May 1930
O restless mind that would not stay,
Confined to dull, unchanging day,
You chased the truths the world would hide,
And let adventure be your guide.
At Christiania’s halls you honed your mind,
Observing life of every kind,
A mind as sharp as any blade,
For science and the paths it laid.
Aboard the Viking through Arctic seas,
You mapped the currents, ice and breeze
Marked every floe, each swell and sky,
Traced the world with careful eye.
Yet soon the mountains called your name,
And snow became both path and aim;
On skis you crossed the untamed land
Of Greenland’s vast and frozen span.
No timid route from safe retreat,
But east to west, no backward feat,
A course that bound your will to dare,
Where none could turn and find repair.
Then northwards still your vision cast,
Upon the Fram, through ice held fast;
A vessel wrought by daring thought,
To drift where lesser wills were caught.
It rose where others met their end,
Would not falter, break nor bend;
And farthest north you reached in grace,
Returning home with steadfast pace.
You did not rest on laurels won,
Nor claim your journey’s work was done;
But turned from ice to human need
With equal strength, with swifter speed.
As envoy for Norway’s fragile claim,
You helped to shape a nation’s name,
And bore its voice with steady hand
Among the powers of the land.
When war fell silent, borders shook,
And exiles wandered without book,
You led with reason, justice clear,
And built for peace a path sincere.
No flag, no country, none to claim,
No home, no hearth, no rightful name;
You forged for them a paper door,
A path where none had been before.
Then back to halls of thought you came
With ocean charts and seas to tame
A Northern star, guiding bright,
Sparked Scottish minds with Arctic light.
When Amundsen was lost at sea,
You spoke for him with dignity
Your voice gave form to nation’s pain,
And called his spirit home again.
From one last journey through the snow,
You fell to illness, stricken low.
You reached the shore of endless rest,
Yet in your works, the world is blessed.
In medals, laws and countless lives;
Still your legacy survives,
In daring deeds and courage shown,
Where strength and heart are truly known.
From mind to mountain, ice to sea,
To acts of mercy, bold and free.
In every arc, both wide and far,
You showed us best what humans are.
